Passing of Jean Béranger
FIS wishes to express its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Jean Béranger, former President of the French Ski Federation who died on Friday, 17th August. The 75-year-old apparently suffered a heart attack while climbing the 'Col d'Allevard' nearby his home.
After his own ski racing career, Jean Béranger was one of the most successful ladies head coaches in international Alpine Skiing overseeing the emergence of a strong French ladies team from 1962-1972 that included many gold medals and victories on the FIS World Cup tour with stars such as the Goitschel sisters, Annie Famose, Isabelle Mir, Michele Jacot, Françoise Macchi, the Lafforgue sisters and Fabienne Serrat. Jacot remains the last French Overall World Cup champion, having clinched the title in 1970.
Married to former Slalom Olympic Champion Christine Goitschel (Innsbruck 1964), he strongly contributed to the successful development of Val Thorens (FRA), the highest ski resort in the Alps, where he also ran the local ski club and the ski school. Furthermore, Jean Béranger was in charge of the national ski racing program for several seasons, as well as the Regional Ski Association of Savoy.
