Sunny Crans-Montana 2011 off to a good start

Beautiful blue skies and sunshine pure have so far characterized the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Crans-Montana (SUI). The event was opened on Sunday evening in front of a crowd of 5,000 people and with the 51 nations at the centre of the town of Crans-Montana. The opening ceremony was topped off by an appearance and speech by special guest Didier Défago, the reigning Olympic downhill champion who congratulated the athletes for qualifying and thanked their parents and coaches for their support.

After four of the ten events, the home team from Switzerland has shown significant strength and currently leads the medal table with four medals against three for France. Whilst the men's giant slalom still remained tightly in French hands as 20-year-old Alexis Pinturault repeated his 2009 title and the 2010 champion Mathieu Faivre took third, it was a Swiss party in the men's slalom. Reto Schmidiger, who successfully defended his Junior World Championship title in slalom, was joined on the podium by fellow Swiss Justin Murisier. Schmidiger also become the first racer ever to defend the slalom title in two consecutive years since the inauguration of the Junior World Championships in 1982.

In the first two ladies events, the victories have gone to Scandinavia. After Norwegian Lotte Smiseth Sejersted dominated both trainings and took an expected title in the ladies downhill, Sweden's Sara Hector won the giant slalom. Swiss talent Wendy Holdener is so far the only double medalist in Crans-Montana, winning silver in the downhill and bronze in the giant slalom.

The Crans-Montana championships will continue until Saturday with another six title events.
