Riesch, Kostelic top all season prize money list

Riesch, Kostelic top all season prize money list

The FIS World Championships 2011 marked the premiere FIS title events where prize money was awarded in addition to the coveted FIS snowflake medals and diplomas. When added together, the World Championship prize money also made its mark on the cross-discipline, all-season prize money rankings which cover both the World Cup and World Championships earnings during the 2010/2011 season.

Leading the overall ladies' and men's lists are the Audi FIS Ski World Cup champions Maria Riesch (GER) and Ivica Kostelic (CRO), respectively, who both also won medals at the FIS World Ski Championships 2011. With her World Championship earnings, Maria Riesch passed the half-a-million Swiss Franc milestone ahead of runner-up Lindsey Vonn (USA) whose expectations for GAP2011 did not quite materialize.

The ladies' 2011 FIS Cross-Country World Cup and Tour de Ski winner Justyna Kowalczyk, who also won three medals at Oslo 2011, leads the Nordic athletes by ranking 3rd in the ladies' overall earnings with just below CHF 400'000. On the men's side, Kostelic is trailed by the 2011 Cross-Country World Cup champion Dario Cologna who also triumphed at the 2011 Tour de Ski but failed to win a medal at the World Championships. Another Swiss, Didier Cuche ranks 3rd in the men's list, just before the season's Ski Jumping dominator Thomas Morgenstern who won three gold medals at Oslo 2011 along with the large crystal globe for the World Cup and the Four-Hills-Tournament.
