Lahti, Finland - Candidate 2017
The 2012 FIS Congress in Korea will bring about the election of the host of the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. On Tuesday, 29th May 2012, each Candidate will have the chance to make presentations to the respective Technical Committees, as well as a final presentation to the FIS Council. They will also display their candidatures to the extended FIS family on exhibition stands at the Congress venue.
The official announcement of the winner will take place on Thursday, 31st May 2012 at approximately 19:00 local time (12:00 CET) and will be streamed live on the FIS websites.
Nordic ski sport has a strong tradition in Finnish history and is one of the most popular and followed sports in Finnish society. Lahti's "Join the Celebration" concept aims to combine a variety of cultural festivals to the World Ski Championships expecting to gather more than one million people. The hosting of the Nordic events in 2017 would also "join the celebration" of Finland´s 100th anniversary of independence in the same year.
Following a strong environmental legacy, Finland is committed to organizing the greenest FIS World Ski Championships in history. To reach this target, the Candidate has prepared a comprehensive environmental program combining the Green City strategy of Lahti to the requirements of a major sporting event.
In addition, athletes would be provided high quality conditions and services both on and off the competition sites of Lahti Sports Center where all competitions are held.
