International children's racing season culminates
As one of the major international children's races this season, the Whistler Cup was held from 6-8th April in Whistler, British Columbia (CAN). This year's edition represented the 20th anniversary of the annual event for 11 to 14 year-olds that featured boys and girls' combined, super-G, slalom and giant slalom races. Some 350 of the world's best young skiers raced in the only international ski racing event for children held in North America.
Whilst victory in the nations standings has routinely gone to the host Canadians, this year the Swiss won the Whistler Cup. Canada I finished second and third went to Italy. Teams consisted of three boys and three girls.
Meanwhile, the 32nd edition of La Scara was held in Val d'Isere (FRA) from 3rd -6th April and it turned out to be a great success. A total of 1224 racers participated (1190 in 2011) from 33 nations which helped the Scara once again establish itself as a premium rendez‐vous for children 1 and 2 racing.
As the final event of the year, the Ingemartrofen in Tärnaby, the home of legendary Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Pärson, just took place last weekend still in good snow conditions.
The main international children's races include the Italian Topolino in Trento, Pinocchio in Montecatini, Swedish Ingemartrofen in Tärnaby, Canadian Whistler Cup in Whistler, French La Scara in Val d'Isère, Trofeu Borruffafrom in Andorra, Czech Skiinterkriterium in Řicky, Serbian Bambi kup and Slovenian Pokal Loka.
From next season, the Children's race categorization will change to using the under-age groups, i.e. U12, U14 or U16.
