La Molina 2011 well underway
The 9th FIS Snowboard World Championships were opened at the sold-out Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, Spain on Saturday. FIS President Gian Franco Kasper officially opened the championships before 8'300 spectators who then were treated to the finals of the first title event, the men's big air, at the same venue.
The first title went to Petja Piiroinen, who thereby continued the tradition of strong Finnish performances at World Championship big air title events, becoming the fourth rider to bring gold for Finland in five big air contests held so far. Zach Stone (CAN) and Seppe Smits (BEL) took second and third, respectively.
In the first event in La Molina, snowboard cross on Tuesday, Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) and Alex Pullin (AUS) were crowned the 2011 world champions. In the ladies final, Jacobellis edged off the best qualifier Nelly Moenne Loccoz (FRA) and World Cup leader Dominique Maltais (CAN) in a tight battle. On the men's side, the rider from Down Under mastered the 650-meter-long course in La Molina, Spain, claiming his first ever major title. Americans Seth Wescott and Nate Holland rounded out the podium as second and third.
In Wednesday's first parallel race, the PGS, Alena Zavarzina (RUS) and Benjamin Karl (AUT) grabbed gold. The 21-year-old from Novosibirsk impressed with some flawless riding defeating Austrian veterans Claudia Riegler and Doris Guenther in the ladies' final. "Zavi" thus tied onto a strong Russian tradition at the FIS World Championships of three previous medals between 2005 and 2009.
On the men's side, Benjamin Karl underlined his role as top favorite by dominating the field. The defending 2009 champion in PSL, Karl added his first PGS title. In the final, Benji relegated Rok Marguc (SLO) to second position with Roland Fischnaller (ITA) in third.
The 2011 Championships will continue with the halfpipe competitions on Thursday, parallel slalom on Friday and historical first medal competitions in slopestyle on Saturday.
