Alpine Youth & Children’s sub-committee in Roccaraso

Alpine Youth & Children’s sub-committee in Roccaraso

Members of the FIS Alpine Youth and Children’s sub-committee gathered for their annual meeting during the competitions of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Roccaraso (ITA). The sub-committee received reports for future FIS Junior World Championship Organizers in 2013  Quebec (CAN) and 2014 in Jasna (SVK), in addition to reviewing the recently completed 2012 Youth Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck.

Alpine Skiing has now adopted the widely used “U” or “under” description for the various children and junior categories and with the season 2012-13 these will now be U14 (Kinder 1), U16 (Kinder 2), U18 (Junior 1) and U21 (Junior 2).

The sub-committee was informed of the decision of the FIS Council that the equipment standard for the 2013 Junior World Championships will conform to the World Cup/European Cup standard.

“We have seen a very high level of competition amongst the athletes from more than 45 nations at these World Junior Championships” said Committee Chairman Ken Read (CAN). “And the standard of skiing is impressive from every nation, demonstrating a commitment to training and offering good high performance programs at both the children’s level and junior level, giving us confidence our sport has a bright future.”

The sub-committee will continue to work with improvement of technical regulations for the setting of courses for children and the progression of equipment from children to junior age groups, along with improvements to the Junior World Ski Championships which are now organized at an extremely high level thanks to the commitment of Organizers like Roccaraso.
