Snowboard Finals in Arosa
The LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season 2010/11 will wrap up in Arosa (SUI) from 24th-27th March when two snowboard cross races will be organized along with finals in halfpipe and parallel GS. Over the course of the long World Cup weekend in the Swiss resort, which hosted the 2007 World Snowboard Championships, the winners of the coveted World Cup crystal globes will be decided.
So far, two World Cup title winners have been crowned. Besides Clemens Schattschneider (AUT), who claimed the first ever big air-slopestyle World Cup title, Ekaterina Tudegesheva (RUS) clinched her first small and large crystal globes for the ladies parallel World Cup and the speed overall World Cup titles.
The 2011 season winners in snowboard cross, halfpipe and parallel (men) will be decided over the next few days. In ladies SBX, Dominique Maltais (CAN) is in the best position to bring home her career's second globe thanks to a comfortable lead over runner-up Lindsey Jacobellis (USA). The fight on the men's side glory is much tighter with the nine best ranked riders within 960 points, and with a chance to edge out current World Cup leader Jonathan Cheever (USA) from the top spot in the last two races of the season.
On the freestyle side, all eyes are on two duels. The ladies' World Cup leader Xuetong Cai (CHN) has a lead of 700 points over world champion Holly Crawford (AUS) and only needs an eighth rank to claim her first World Cup title. The difference between the top two men, Nathan Johnstone (AUS) and Ryo Aono (JPN), is just 280 points. (Note from the editor, in the Snowboard World Cup there are 1000 points for a win)
The last decision will take place on Sunday, when Benjamin Karl (AUT) aims for a successful title defense on the parallel slope of Arosa. Chances are high that the 2011 double world champion will walk away with another crystal globe as he has a substantial lead over his pursuers Andreas Prommegger (AUT) and Roland Fischnaller (ITA). Prommegger will be trying to start although handicapped after he damaged ligaments in his left ankle and his right knee last weekend.
