Australia continues to celebrate 150 years of skiing

The year 2011 marks 150 years of recreational Alpine Skiing in Australia.  To mark this auspicious occasion, Australia Post has issued a commemorative stamp set. The set was released on Tuesday 19th July 2011.

Skiing in Australia had its genesis 150 years ago at the Snowy Mountains settlement known as Kiandra, New South Wales. A small group of Austrians and a Norwegian, all gold miners, were behind the activity. The club that developed was called the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club, later renamed Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club. Australia’s first snowfield T-bar was also erected at Kiandra in 1957.

Today Skiing and Snowboarding are practiced in three states in Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Just over two million lift passes were sold in Australian resorts in 2009. The 14 resorts vary in size and sophistication, the most popular being Perisher, Thredbo, Mt Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek.
