Successful Ski Jumping Continental Cup season 2011/12
Already before this season's final during the upcoming weekend in Kuopio (FIN), Continental Cup coordinator Horst Tielmann can look back on a positive 2011/12 season.
"From a sporting perspective it was a winter at a very high level. Athletes, who were on top in the COC could establish themselves in the World Cup right away. For example Rune Velta, who was second at the Ski Flying World Championships in Vikersund, Vegard Sklett or Michael Hayboeck. Only the events in Kranj had to be cancelled due to bad weather. The competitions were organized at a high level. Some of the Organizers even reached World Cup standard, especially Neustadt and Brotterode. I would also like to highlight that there were 15,000 spectators in Iron Mountain", Tielmann said.
Already at the season opening in Rovaniemi (FIN) in late November indicated that the Norwegians would have a very strong team this winter.
The jumpers led by coach Haavard Lie won 10 out of 25 competitions this season, Andreas Stjernen being the most successful jumper with five victories.
With only two more competitions left, the Scandinavians currently have five athletes in the top 10 of the overall ranking. Only Slovenia can match the Norwegian squad with four jumpers amongst the best ten.
In total 13 different jumpers from five nations won competitions this season. The most famous is former World Champion and 4-Hills-Tournament winner Wolfgang Loitzl of Austria, who stood on top of the podium three times. After their successes in the COC, young Norwegians Vegard Sklett and Anders Fannemel were able to establish themselves in Norway's A-team.
With his five wins and 1017 points, Andreas Stjerenen tops the overall ranking before the final events in Kuopio. Austrian Michael Hayboeck (834 points) is in runner up position and Kenneth Gangnes (774 points) occupies third place.
