Sierra Nevada, Spain - Candidate 2017 With a total of nine applications to host the FIS World Championships in 2016 and 2017, the Austrian venue of Kulm and the Spanish ski resort of Sierra Nevada are sole candidates for the 2016 FIS Ski Flying World Championships and the combined 2017 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships. During the 2012 FIS Congress in Korea, they will have the chance to make a final presentation to the FIS Council as well as present their candidatures to the extended FIS family through exhibition stands at the Congress venue. The official announcement of the selected hosts will take place on Thursday, 31st May 2012 at approximately 19:00 local time (12:00 CET) and will be streamed live on the FIS websites. Located in the south of Spain, the Sierra Nevada belongs to the region of Andalusia in the province of Granada. The organization of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996 was the final feather in the cap that set Sierra Nevada up as a reference internationally for hosting large-scale sports events. In addition, it is the first Spanish resort in terms of turnover and the organization of international events in Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding and Freestyle Skiing. |
