Nordic Junior & U23 World Champs in full swing

Nordic Junior & U23 World Champs in full swing

The participants of the FIS Junior World Ski & U23 Championships in Liberec (CZE) tasted a new atmosphere at the official Opening Ceremony at Dr. Edvard Beneš Square on Monday 21st January.

From the early afternoon until the next day, heavy snow blanketed the town of Liberec and nobody could have wished for better surroundings. The 652 participants enjoyed themselves greatly by clapping their hands, swaying in rhythm and enjoying the refreshing programme prepared for the opening ceremony, including a march of flag bearers from all 36 participating nations.

Roman Kumpošt, FIS Council Member and President of the Organising Committee, welcomed the competitors in the name of FIS: ”It is you who represent the future of Nordic Skiing, and I am convinced that amongst you there are excellent successors to the great stars of our time, as well as those of the recent past. I believe that you will compete with your rivals with all your will, your hearts, and always in the spirit of fair play.”

Since 22nd January, competitions have been in full swing in the disciplines of Cross-Country Skiing and Nordic Combined while the Ski Jumping competitions will be staged over the coming weekend. Among others, the starter fields feature well-known names such as the younger brothers of superstars Petter Northug (NOR) – Thomas - and Dario Cologna (SUI) – Gianluca - who wish to step into the footprints of their famous siblings.
