Cross-Country Final in Sweden
This week, Sweden is again hosting the FIS Cross-Country World Cup Final in Stockholm and Falun. For the third time, he World Cup Final which comprises a competition series over four stages, is being carried out at the Svenska Skidspelen. Only the very best skiers will be in Sweden as just the top 50 in the overall World Cup ranking are qualified to start in the Final (plus the various Continental Cup leaders/winners, U-23 world champions and 5 national skiers).
The Final will get underway with a sprint in classical technique around the famous castle in Stockholm on 16th March and will then continue on 18th-20th in Falun. The challenge for the "Queen and King of Mördarbacken" is set for Friday and will be carried out over 2,5 km for ladies and 3,3 km for men in classical technique. The short pursuit races over 5 km + 5 km (ladies) and 10 km + 10 km (men) will be staged on Saturday whilst the exciting finish with handicap start in free technique (10 km ladies/15 km men) will be taking place on Sunday.
The overall World Cup trophies will be presented on Sunday 20th March after the last stage of the World Cup Final. In total, the best male and female at the World Cup Final can still earn 350 points, 200 for the overall victory and 50 points for the daily victories and overall, 320'000 CHF will be distributed in prize money to the best skiers.
While Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) has secured her third overall World Cup title as well as the distance World Cup globe, Petra Majdic, Arianna Follis and Kikkan Randall still have a chance to claim the sprint World Cup victory. Among them Majdic has the best cards as she leads the rankings by 7 points ahead of Follis. However Kikkan Randall (USA), too, still has a shot with a gap of 29 points to Majdic.
On the men's side, Dario Cologna secured his second overall World Cup globe and the distance World Cup win in Lahti last weekend but the battle for the runner-up is still hot: Petter Northug, Daniel Rickardsson and Lukas Bauer are all within a margin of 105 points in the overall ranking. The sprint globe will go to Emil Joensson (SWE) ahead of Ola Vigen Hattestad (NOR).
