Nordic Combined: Steps in the right direction
The upcoming season of the DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup will return to a full calendar with 28 events at 13 venues, including a stop in Almaty (KAZ), which is a new venue and nation for the series. Chaux-Neuve (FRA) will stage a so-called Super Weekend with three events back-to-back, designed to increase the presence of the discipline in the media and plans for a similar Super Weekend are being worked on for Seefeld (AUT).
The summer Grand Prix 2011 will feature three stops in Oberwiesenthal (GER), Liberec (CZE) and Oberstdorf (GER).
The 2012/13 season will see World Cup events in new locations in Sochi (RUS) and Erzerum (TUR), whilst discussions are underway with Zakopane for a long-term cooperation and staging of Nordic Combined World Cup events there.
The Nordic Combined Finals in Oslo will follow in the footsteps of other FIS disciplines and feature only the 30 best athletes from the season who will perform two jumps and compete in a 15 km cross-country race. A new penalty race with a mass start will also be tested at one event - the idea is that depending on the jumping performance the athlete will have to race a longer distance depending on how far they are behind the best jump. This will be achieved by completing a varying number of penalty loops during the cross-country portion and the location of this trial is yet to be confirmed.
Further positive news entails the increased cooperation with the other two Nordic disciplines through the so-called Nordic Coordination Group. The goal is optimization of the schedules for the Championship programs as well as the big Nordic weekends in Lahti, Oslo and Lillehammer, among other cooperation opportunities.
