Ski Jumping masters summer highlight in Einsiedeln

Einsiedeln (SUI) not only played host for the FIS Grand Prix in Ski Jumping last weekend, but also for the Masters European Championships in Ski Jumping. This event was carried out by the IMC (International Masters Championships), which was founded in 1989. The first so-called Masters World Championships took place in Lake Placid (USA) in 1990, and have since then been held annually. Some ski jumping legends, such as Andreas Goldberger or Matti Nykänen, sometimes take the opportunity to compete in these championships.

The participants in a masters competition must be at least 30 years old, and in Einsiedeln the oldest competitor was 77-year-old Austrian Richard Diess. The Masters competitions were held on three hills (HS 50, HS 77 and HS 117), with each jumper choosing the size of the hill according to his skills and fitness. Each jumper is in fact allowed to compete on two different hills.

Alexander Diess, the assistant coach of the current Austrian national team, also competed in Einsiedeln and finished second twice behind the Swiss Bruno Reuteler.

Diess, who also serves as the team leader of the Austrian masters team, is happy to see a growing number of masters athletes: "Things are on the move in this field. The masters-movement is growing because more former ski jumpers realize that ski jumping is still fun, even when you are no longer a professional athlete." He was also satisfied with the performance of his team. "We were the most successful team on the medals table for the first time and everyone will return home with a medal. Undoubtedly, we are very satisfied!"

The next highlight in the Masters series will be the World Championships in early March 2012 in Szczyrk (POL).
