Winter is here, at least in part
Although the month of November has surprised many with spring-like temperatures and a lack of snowfall, the waiting time seems to finally be over, as temperatures are dropping and the mountains finally begin to be covered in snow. With the warm temperatures in many parts of the world, numerous ski areas have been forced to postpone their early season openings. Last week, the Norwegians had no other option than moving the FIS Cross-Country World Cup opening from Beitostölen to Sjusjöen where minus degrees are currently providing much-needed help for the organizers busily getting ready for their premiere.
With a full FIS calendar next week in Kuusamo (FIN) where the traditional FIS World Cup Nordic Opening will take place, it is reassuring to see that snow making installations are running 24/7 and the event received the official go-ahead after the official snow control today. With temperatures around -5 degrees, the athletes, teams and officials can look forward to three days on crispy newly-made snow. This week Ruka already announced the opening of the first alpine run in the resort. The same can be said about Lilllehammer (NOR), where snow-making machines started this morning, getting ready to ensure a great World Cup start for the ladies Ski Jumping in two weeks.
Moving further south in Europe, statistics from skiinfo.no show that the resorts with the most snow right now are Galdhögpiggen Juvass in Norway with 200 cm, Ghiacciaio Presena in Italy with 200 cm and Pitztaler Gletcher in Austria with solid 174 cm of snow. In Saas-Fee (SUI), there was actually too much snow falling last week, which caused some challenges for the Swiss Freeski Team building an aerial jump. In other words, signs are good that Europeans can prepare their equipment and plan for the start of the ski season shortly.
Canadians have already started the season thanks to good early snowfalls and this coming Friday Whistler will join the open ski areas. In Apex Mountain, the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association shared some impressive photos of knee deep powder and great snow conditions earlier this week. The FIS Alpine World Cup tour continues in North America next week, and most teams have already arrived for training. In Vail (USA), Kjetil Jansrud (NOR) said the following; "We were met by blue skies and white mountain caps. It was pretty sweet to get the feeling of winter again". Lake Louise was confirmed for the men's speed opening on Monday and a long-term weather forecast for the next fortnight calls for daily high temperatures of around -5C and the daily minimum temperatures between -8C and -20C or below. Some snowfall, too, is expected.
