Ladies Ski Jumping World Cup launched
17-year-old Sarah Hendrickson (USA) is the first ever winner in the new FIS Ski Jumping World Cup Ladies presented by Viessmann. The bronze medallist from the 2010 FIS Junior World Championships out-jumped the field to win the inaugural World Cup event on the normal hill (HS 100) in Lillehammer (NOR) last Saturday. The runner-up Coline Mattel (FRA) already ended up a whopping 29.3 points behind Hendrickson; Melanie Faisst (GER) finished third.
"Sarah's skis were super close to her body in flight," said coach Paolo Bernardi. "But if you want to win the World Cup, you have to be a little on the edge." Hendrickson herself enjoyed the great feeling of having written ladies Ski Jumping history. "I admired Lindsey Van when she won the first ever World Championships in Liberec back in 2009", she said, "and I wanted to wear her shoes. I'm on the right track..."
The event in Lillehammer was meticulously planned and perfectly orchestrated. The ladies' and men's World Cup events were mixed into one big air show. 3'000 onsite spectators and millions of viewers on eight TV channels broadcasting live - from ORF in Austria to NHK and STV of Japan - saw female jumpers from eight countries and three continents enter the top ten - as if to underline the global reality of the youngest of FIS World Cup disciplines.
The next stop for the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup Ladies presented by Viessmann is Schonach-Schönwald on 6th January and Hinterzarten on 8th January 2012, both ithe German Black Forest.
