100 years of skiing in Nagano, Japan

100 years of skiing in Nagano, Japan

In 2011, Japan celebrated the centenary of the introduction of skiing in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture. 2012 is the 100th anniversary of the introduction of skiing in Nagano Prefecture, and to mark the occasion the "Inside-Out Ski club" in IIyama city staged a ‘race' on a city street that ran up the hill and the steps to the local shrine.

All of 150 meters, the course was decorated with tradition paper lanterns for the night time race. The mix of contestants included a skier in 100-year-old costumes, participants from kids to old-timers, with the odd competitive racer mixed in.

Iiyama is in Northern Nagano, just 20-minute drive from Nozawa Onsen which hosted Biathlon at the Olympic Games in 1998, and is home to the Japan Ski Museum. Known for its big snowfall (last week over 2 meters cumulative which is a notable record), Iiyama is home to two high school ski teams that have groomed several Japan team members over the years, including current U23 team members Michiko Kashiobara and Akira Lenting, and U20 team member Kozue Takizawa.
