Qi and Cheng conquer aerials World Cup titles

Qi and Cheng conquer aerials World Cup titles

Following highly successful FIS Freestyle World Championships in Deer Valley (USA), the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup season is now back in action and the season finals for the aerials World Cup were held in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, last weekend.

In front of a hometown crowd of about 2,000 Belarusians Anton Kushnir pulled out all the stops to win big in the men's competition. He landed two quadruple twisting, triple back flips to earn a total score of 256.31 in his country's first-ever World Cup. He was joined on the podium by Ukraine's Stanislav Kravchuk and Belorussian countryman Denis Osipau. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko handed out the awards to the winning men.

In the season's final rankings, China's Guangpu Qi, the Deer Valley 2011 silver medalist, won the small crystal globe for the best male aerialist this season. Anton Kushnir finished 2nd in the season rankings and Switzerland's Renato Ulrich took 3rd.

Travis Gerrits (CAN), who was sixth at the World Championships earlier this month, was honored with the FIS Aerials Rookie of the Year Award.

In ladies' season final aerial action, China retained its grip on the top spot with Shuang Cheng taking the win and securing the crystal globe as the overall rankings winner for the season. Ashley Caldwell of the USA continued the momentum of her breakout season with a second-place finish and FIS aerials female Rookie of the Year Fanyu Kong from China was third. In the season rankings, Mengtao Xu of China finished second behind teammate Cheng and Ukraine's Olga Volkova finished 3rd.
