Outstanding atmosphere at Oslo 2011

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo (NOR) have now reached Competition Day 7 of 11. While many medals are still to be awarded it is already clear that Oslo 2011 will go down to history as another testament of Norwegian love for Nordic Skiing. Despite varying weather conditions including days with thick fog and snowfall, the stadiums and trail sides have been full of enthusiastic supporters creating an atmosphere second to none.

Since with the opening ceremony at the University Square last Wednesday evening where an estimated 50'000 people celebrated the beginning of the championships, tens of thousands of spectators have attended the daily competitions and evening medal ceremonies alike.

Thanks to Norwegian home team success, led by the three gold medals won by Marit Bjoergen in three events and the successful defense of the men's pursuit world championship title by Petter Northug Jr., the fans have also been able to rejoice with their local stars.

After 14 of the 21 medal events, Norway leads the medals table with a total of 12 medals (4 each), followed by Austria with four golds, and one silver & bronze each. Sweden currently ranks 3rd while Germany is in 4th place with six medals. A total of 11 nations have won medals, of which seven have won gold.

The Austrians have especially shown excellent performances on the Midstuen jumping hill garnering all three Ski Jumping titles through Daniela Iraschko in the ladies' competition and through Thomas Morgenstern and Team Ski Austria in the men's events. Germany has collected all of its medals in Nordic Combined. In the men's Cross-Country team sprint, Canada made history by claiming the first men's gold medal for the country at any major title event.

Oslo 2011 will conclude with the men's 50km Cross-Country competition followed by the official closing ceremony on Sunday.
