Nordic Combined World Cup Finals in Lahti

One week after the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo, the 2010/11 DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup will come to its conclusion in Lahti (FIN) where the last two competitions of the season will be held on Friday and Saturday. The Lahti Ski Games have a long tradition as a festival of Nordic sports, last winter, a total of 76'500 fans attended the competitions at the hills and tracks.

The quest for the overall World Cup is still open. Frenchman Jason Lamy Chappuis is in the lead, with Mikko Kokslien (NOR) 180 points behind and 53 points ahead of 3rd-ranked Felix Gottwald. The situation in the Nation's Cup ranking is clear, Austria will likely take home the trophy.

The season's final in Finland may also be a chance for those who did not do well in Oslo to demonstrate their capabilities. For example, Norway could not win an individual medal in their own country. "I had big dreams for the Championships but they did not come true and I'm disappointed. In Lahti next weekend I want to capture second place in the overall World Cup," Kokslien said about his goals for the final events. The Germans however will travel to Lahti full of self-confidence, with several Oslo 2011 medals in their pockets.

Lahti will also be a time for Good-Byes. Felix Gottwald already retired once before making a successful comeback but this time his retirement shall be final. Winning three medals at Oslo 2011, the most traditional location for Nordic sports, was a worthy career end for him. "There is no time for sentimentality", Gottwald said.

Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane (both USA) will not compete in Lahti. Lodwick is already on holiday with his family in the Mediterranean whilst Spillane returned home. There are voices that claim Lodwick and Bill Demong will focus on winning the overall World Cup next season.
