Untimely passing of Mika Myllylä

Untimely passing of Mika Myllylä

FIS sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mika Myllylä who passed away on Tuesday, 5th July, at his home in Kokkola, Finland, at the age of just 41.

Mika Myllylä was one of the most famous and successful skiers from Finland. All in all, he won 15 medals at the Olympic Games and FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. He climbed on the highest step of the World Cup podium 10 times, the last time in Davos in 2000. However, his career was blighted by the Lahti doping scandal when he and five teammates tested positive for the use of hydroxyethyl starch, a banned blood plasma expander and were all banned for two years. After his career, Myllylä became a FIS Technical Delegate and was involved for example in the Tour of Barents spring series.
