Condolences after the passing of Gerhard Hochmuth

FIS sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Prof. Dr. Gerhard Hochmuth (83) who passed away in Leipzig at the end of last week.

FIS honorary member Professor Dr. Hochmuth was an outstanding personality who had a decisive influence on ski jumping over the last decades. As Chairman, he led the sub committee for Rules and Control within the FIS Ski Jumping Committee as from 1983 till 1998 and was a consultant to FIS as a technical expert from 1998 to 2003.

"With Gerhard Hochmuth, the international ski jumping family loses one of its most important experts of the last 30 years," said Walter Hofer, FIS Race Director Ski Jumping. „His biomechanical analyses and knowledge provided the theoretical basis for the modern appearance of ski jumping. Together with Hans Ostler and Hans Heini Gasser he was responsible for the development of international competition rules for decades. Because of his mathematical models and wind tunnel analyses it was possible to make ski jumping safer and fairer.
