International Athletes’ Forum convenes in Colorado Springs
The fifth International IOC Athletes’ Forum took place in Colorado Springs, USA from 7th-11th October. Athletes’ representatives from the IOC Athletes’ Commissions, as well as International Federations, the International Paralympic Committee and WADA, and is designed to give them a strong voice within the Olympic movement. FIS was represented in the Forum by the FIS Athletes’ Commission’s chairman Killian Albrecht, whilst FIS Secretary General, Sarah Lewis was invited to present details of FIS’ activities in the fields of health, safety, security and insurance at the IOC Athletes Forum and participate in the workshop.
The Colorado Springs Forum included discussions on a series of subject areas including: Athlete’s Entourage (those surrounding and advising athletes including coaches and doctors); Communications and Social Media; Athletes’ Career Program; Health Safety and Security of Athletes; Anti-doping; Betting and Gambling; Games Time Experience; and the work of the Athletes Commissions themselves. It ended with calls for tough action on doping and tighter control of those surrounding athletes, such as restrictions on the size of entourages at important events, and for those members of the entourage to face, investigation and sanctions if athletes in their care are also facing action.
The perhaps strongest recommendations came from the working group on anti-doping. The recommendation was that athletes ‘convicted of a deliberate and aggravated doping offences should receive a lifetime Olympic ban’. In addition, the Forum found that coaches, doctors and any other members of an athletes’ entourage found to be taking part in illegal doping practices must be convicted and sanctioned.‘ The recommendations will be put to the Executive Board of the IOC for approval.
Kilian Albrecht commented: “It was a great opportunity to exchange experiences and network with the Athletes’ representatives from the other Federations and to meet the members of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. Frankie Fredericks is doing a great job as its Chairman and is always ready to help and assist. The same goes for Becky Scott, a former FIS athlete.”
He added: “My goal at the Forum was to try to represent the interests of the FIS Athletes as proactively as possible. It was interesting to find out how the situation of the athletes differs across the different Federations, from full representation in the highest decision-making bodies, to non-existence of any athlete inclusion at all.”
