Zagreb welcomes Alpine year 2012
Thanks to major efforts on the hill by the local Organizing Committee's crew directed by the event's general manager and FIS Council Member Vedran Pavlek alongside Markus Mayr, FIS Race Director for the ladies' technical events, an excellent night slalom took place on Zagreb's Sljeme mountain on Tuesday night.
There were again no true challengers for the current slalom queen Marlies Schild at the 8th Snow Queen Trophy. For Schild the win in Croatia was the fifth slalom victory this season and her fourth Snow Queen Trophy. At 32, Schild is now just two short of Vreni Schneider's legendary 34 career slalom victories.
Despite the Croatians not having any of their own athletes at the start this year, the race had a great turnout with approximately 8000 cheering fans celebrating every racer coming down the challenging slope. Sljeme once again re-created its well-known atmosphere in the finish area and underlined it's status as one of the races which the ladies enjoy year after year.
After the men's ended the year 2011 on Bormio's legendary Stelvio downhill course with an impressive Swiss double victory by Didier Defago who recorded his first victory after an entire season out through injury and Patrick Küng who was temporarily on the podium of the downhill in Val Gardena that was ultimately halted and cancelled, it's now the men's turn to switch to the short skis and race in Zagreb on 5th January.
The big question in Croatia seems to be - after coming second three times - whether home-boy Ivica Kostelic can finally take home the crystal crown at the fifth edition of the Vip Snow King Trophy. He surely has some pressure on his shoulders, but something else that makes Thursday's race special for the Croatian champion is his sister Janica's 30th birthday. The Snow Queen Trophy started as an event that should be a home race for her, and it was timed to happen on her birthday. With 30 career victories, she never managed to win on home ground, her best result here being a third place (the famous run without a glove), but it might just be Ivica's time to redeem his sister.
The ladies' season continues already tomorrow Thursday with the first downhill training in Austria's Bad Kleinkirchheim whilst the men will be moving to Switzerland from Croatia where the first of the Classics is on schedule on Saturday with the giant slalom on Adelboden's Chuenisbergli.
