Freestyle Junior Worlds commence in Valmalenco

Freestyle Junior Worlds commence in Valmalenco

Tuesday 20th March saw the opening ceremony of the 2012 FIS Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships in Valmalenco, Italy take place. Over 350 athletes from 27 nations across five continents will compete this week in moguls, dual moguls, aerials, slopestyle and ski cross, the Junior Worlds are a true testament to the growth of Freestyle Skiing.

"There is a great turnout. The participants we are seeing now are those who we will be seeing compete in the 2014 Sochi Games and become stars of the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup circuit in the coming years. It is exciting and a great reflection of our sport," commented FIS Freestyle Coordinator Joe Fitzgerald. After hosting the FIS Freestyle World Cup finals in 2008, Valmalenco has been a popular spot for Snowboard and Freestyle events. The ability to share infrastructure between Snowboarding and Freestyle has been a huge benefit this year especially due to low snowfall.

"Since snow conditions were not optimal, the Organizing Committee has done a great job in transforming the courses from last week's LG FIS Snowboard World Cup finals to host the Freestyle Junior Worlds events this week," Fitzgerald remarked further. "There is no question that the Organizers are ready at work hard to stage a successful event. Heavy snowfall in the area on Monday this week added a winter touch on top of the beautiful Italian mountain region of Lombardy."

With the ski cross events wrapping up Tuesday, aerials, slopestyle, moguls and dual moguls will follow through until the end of this week. Unfortunately, due to snow limitations the halfpipe events planned for Saturday had to be cancelled. Bravo Valmalenco!
