10th FIS Youth & Children’s Seminar

10th FIS Youth & Children’s Seminar

Coinciding with the introduction of this new section, the 10th FIS Youth & Children’s Seminar took place on 3rd October at the FIS Technical Autumn Meetings. Reaching a landmark event of ten FIS Youth and Children’s Seminars provides us with an opportunity to reflect over the past decade and look ahead to the future.

This year’s seminar focused on the overall theme of “Learning about recruitment across sports’ borders”. It was attended by more than 80 delegates from National Ski Associations.

Speeches by Martin Vogler, Management and Head of Youth at the Swiss Sailing Federation, Sheila Stephans Desbans, Development Manager of the International Rowing Federation and Horst Lichtner, Secretary General of the International Ice Hockey Federation presented their activities and gave the participants from the National Ski Associations many interesting ideas. These were followed by a reflection on developments of Bring Children to the Snow that was introduced five years ago with case studies given by Agnieszka Adamczyk from Zakopane (POL) and Charlotta Burger Backstrom from Sweden.

After lunch the IOC’s Head of the Youth Olympic Games Coordination, Antoine Goetschy gave an insight into the future of the Youth Olympic Games following its’ highly successful debut in Innsbruck earlier this year. Four nations added their perspectives represented by Gary Furrer, Chief of Youth Development for Swiss Ski; Klara Kaszo, President of the Hungarian Ski Association; Petri Linden, Education and Development Manager of the Finnish Ski Association and Ana Jelusic, who was the Croatian Youth Olympic Games Athlete Ambassador in Innsbruck.

As is customary at the FIS Youth & Children’s Seminar, Ken Read, Chairman of the FIS Coordination Group for Youth & Children concluded the well-received Seminar by delivering the summary of the day’s discussions and conclusions.
