FIS Snowboard World Champs 2013 kick off

FIS Snowboard World Champs 2013 kick off

From 17th to 27th January, a total of 432 riders from 46 nations will compete for gold, silver and bronze in six different medal events in the 10th FIS Snowboard World Championships in Stoneham and Quebec City (CAN).

The deep field of competitors is led by almost every title defender from 2011, including Enni Rukajärvi (FIN) and Seppe Smits (BEL) in slopestyle, Holly Crawford (AUS) and Nathan Johnstone (AUS) in halfpipe, Petja Piiroinen (FIN) in big air, Alex Pullin (AUS) in snowboard cross as well as race boarders Benjamin Karl (AUT) PSL and PGS, Hilde-Katrine Engeli (NOR) PSL and Alena Zavarzina (RUS) PGS.

In addition, most of the 2010 Olympic champions have entered the competitions, with the likes of Vancouver halfpipe gold medallist Torah Bright (AUS) who will start in the slopestyle contest. Jasey Jay Anderson (CAN) winner of the PGS will give it another shot in the parallel events while 2010 snowboard cross Olympic champions Maelle Ricker (CAN) and Seth Wescott (USA) are also on-site to fight for the titles.

Altered course design

Over the course of next two weeks, the world's best will be part of a truly spectacular event, which has built up from many previous World Cups staged in Quebec.

One of the new features is the slopestyle event taking place on the same slope as the PGS and PSL events as it delivers more space and better inclination which creates the speed that allows especially the jumps to be of a larger dimension. In addition, the snowboard cross course design features a longer stretch to provide riders with more air time for jumps. Additionally, more space has been allocated to allow for better passing. The halfpipe was also extended to allow every rider a minimum of five hits per run and thus an increased trick variety.

The finals of the different Snowboard events will be held on the following dates:

18th January: Slopestyle ladies and men
19th January: Big air
20th January: Halfpipe ladies and men
25th January: Parallel giant slalom ladies and men
26th January: Snowboard cross ladies and men
27th January: Parallel slalom ladies and men
