Kulm, Austria - Ski Flying Candidate 2016

With a total of nine applications to host the FIS World Championships in 2016 and 2017, the Austrian venue of Kulm and the Spanish ski resort of Sierra Nevada are sole candidates for the 2016 FIS Ski Flying World Championships and the combined 2017 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships.

During the 2012 FIS Congress in Korea, they will have the chance to make a final presentation to the FIS Council as well as present their candidatures to the extended FIS family through exhibition stands at the Congress venue.

The official announcement of the selected hosts will take place on Thursday, 31st May 2012 at approximately 19:00 local time (12:00 CET) and will be streamed live on the FIS websites.

The 1996 FIS Ski Flying World Championships in the region of Tauplitz, Bad Mitterndorf set a milestone for the further development of sports in the town of Kulm. Motivated to deliver another excellent championship with safe and sound conditions for athletes, the bid committee plans to reconstruct the hill in accordance with the new FIS rules. The concept also includes the construction of three new ski jumping platforms in order to provide development opportunities for the next generation.

Counting more than 800,000 spectators since 1996, another focus of the bid committee is to organize a Ski Flying festival which attracts hundreds of thousands fascinated people. As part of the event, the Organizers aim at carrying out a special project together with the European Union. Within this framework, 1000 apprentices from across Europe shall experience on site how success is built on fascination and the provision of a good job –as exemplified by ski jumpers.

Most major events today also have a social component, hence personalities of public interest should enrich the happening. In the past, Muhammad Ali or Prince Albert of Monaco have cheered for the athletes.

For the opening ceremony, the motto “working on a dream” has been chosen and conceptual plans are already underway. On a whole, the activities of the Kulm bid committee are aiming at building up growing fascination for Ski Flying on a global scale.
