Lavallee and Burov take Aerial Gold at Junior Worlds
Russian skiers have dominated the opening Freestyle event at the FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard Junior World Championships in Valmalenco, Italy, bringing home four of six possible medals.
Last year, at the same venue, Team Russia had secured 'only' a full set of three medals.
While Maxim Burov won the men's event under a cloudy sky at the Palu Park with 85.68 edging off China's Shuang Wang to a close second (85.30), his fellow countryman Vasily Polenov (80.37) rounded out the podium as third.
On the women's side of things, also two athletes from Russia earned podium spots: Alexandra Orlova (68.15) and Liubov Nikitina (63.96) took second and third.
Only Canadian high flyer Catrine Lavallee shone out and held off the strong force from the East bringing home her well-deserved first Junior Worlds title in her very first appearance.
The 18-year-old talent scored 74.46 to claim the Gold.
