Katrin Oferl and Thomas Zangerl have successfully defended their National Ski Cross Title last Saturday on the Pitztal glacier.

Ofner claimed her career's eighth with Andrea Limbacher and Christina Staudinger finishing as second and third.

The men's podium was rounded out by Thomas Harasser in second and Robert Winkler in third.

Both Austrian skiers also won the race sanctioned as FIS race which had attracted a strong international field.

In the women's final, Ofner relegated Australia's Sami Kennedy-Sim and Belgium's Aude Aguilaniu to the second and third rank respectively while Zangerl crossed the finish line ahead of Germany's Thomas Fischer and Brant Crossan from the USA.

“It's nice to kick off the new season with a win. The day was very exhausting being filled up with training, qualifiers and the finals; especially with the given high altitude level of the venue,” Zangerl said.

“But I was able to claim the holeshot and dominated the heat right from the start blocking off all attacks of my rivals.”

His teammate Ofner, who met the expectations as title queen, wasn't as pleased as the result might have indicated.

“Of course I'm happy with my career's eighth but I also noticed that there are some parts with some room for improvement. However, I'm optimistic for the World Cup opener,” she stated.

The World Cup tour will pick up pace early December when Nakiska, Canada hosts the season's first ski cross event on Dec 5 and 6.
