Falun -

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championship courses for Falun 2015 are now all set, just in time for winter arriving in Dalarna County. To a large extent, the modified Cross-Country courses represent an updated, modernised version of the courses used at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 1993.

An important part of the work for the new competition courses was to preserve what is a major characteristic of Falun and Lugnet: Mördarbacken, Vallen and the red Dala chalet.

“The new courses build on the skiing tradition that exists here. We have in fact created two new “Murder Hills”.. We have also worked hard to move the decisive parts closer to the finish area”, commented Tobias Jönsson, Chief of Course for Falun 2015.

The new course system features 2.5 km, 3.75 km and 5 km loops with separate loops for the classical and free techniques. In addition, there is a 1.2 km sprint course for ladies and a 1.4 km course for the men. In comparison to the World Championships in Falun 20 years ago, the trails have become wider to accommodate mass start competitions.

“It has been a detailed process involving the Organisers, FIS, athletes and TV. We have taken advantage of all the expertise available in Sweden in this field and, on behalf of FIS, we are very satisfied with the final solution”, stated Vegard Ulvang, Chairman of the FIS Cross-Country Committee. “With these courses we can offer very challenging and fair races for the athletes and also transmit excellent images showcasing Falun and the traditional Swedish landscape in a fabulous way”, he added.
