First international Day of Sport for Development and Peace
Last August, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus a resolution proclaiming 6th 2014 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. This date also marks the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens (GRE) in 1896. The objective of the proclamation is to promote the use of sport and physical activity as a tool for development and peace.
On the day, the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Movement joined in global celebrations of sport as a catalyst for social change, development and peace in a number of ways including: showcasing how their contribution to sports development has benefited people; used this day as a platform to call for action, and advocated greater investment in sport, related infrastructures, physical education and access to sports programmes.
