Alpine legend Steve Podborski lights up the North Pole
Canadian alpine skiing legend and Chairman of the FIS Sub-Committee for Skiers with a Disability, Steve Podborski, brought the Olympic flame from the ship to the ice when it went on its historic expedition to the North Pole, for the first time in its history.
The World Cup downhill champion in 1982 and Olympic bronze medallist in Lake Placid (1980) was selected as one of the eight country representatives of the Arctic Council. He served as Canada’s Assistant Chef de Mission for their home Games at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games, and Torch Bearer for that Olympics as well. For Sochi, Podborski is the Chef the Mission for the Canadian Olympic Team.
Cross-Country star Lubov Egorova takes cauldron to Palace Square in St. Petersburg
In St Petersburg, six-time Olympic Cross-Country Skiing Champion and three-time World Champion Lubov Egorova passed the torch to the governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko for the lighting of the cauldron in front of the Hermitage where thousands of spectators gathered.
After delivering the flame to Palace Square, the Russian Cross-Country star commented: "I recall all my awards including both gold and silver - because of my mistakes. But being a part of the relay reminds me of my first Olympic gold medal. You are training for such competitions for a very long time, and finally you realise that everything depends on you. I did not think that one day I would bear the Olympic torch in St. Petersburg".
Snowboarder Ekaterina Ilyukhina to carry torch

The Sochi 2014 Torch Relay will be the second one for the FIS athlete and parallel giant slalom silver medallist from Vancouver 2010 after she ran with the torch in the Olympic Torch Relay at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
