IOC Executive Board confirms Big Air venue for Beijing 2022
Before the IOC Session in Lima, Peru, the IOC Executive Board of which FIS President Gian Franco Kasper is a member, met on 11th and 12th September 2017.
Besides hearing updates by the Organising Committees of the different editions of the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, the IOC Executive Board approved the location of Big Air for Beijing 2022, which will be at the site of the Shougang Industrial Park in West Beijing.
The site was a steel plant that was closed for environmental reasons before the Olympic Games Beijing 2008. It is now being redeveloped as an ambitious mixed development, which will include housing, leisure facilities, sports facilities and office space. The Executive Board was excited by the project and felt that it would be an iconic location for Big Air at the Games. It is also the location of the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee (BOCOG) Headquarters.
Among other decisions, the Executive Board agreed to unify the oaths taken by athletes, followed by officials and then coaches at the opening ceremony, into one oath, with athletes taking the lead, as of the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang next February to shorten this segment of the ceremony.
