Passing of Franz Gabl
Franz Gabl, an Austrian alpine legend and Olympic medallist passed away on 23rd January 2014 in Bellingham, Washingston (USA) at the age of 93 years. Born in 1921 in St. Anton am Arlberg (AUT), Gabl started with ski sports at an early age and won several events in Ski Jumping, notably the National Championships in 1936, when he was still a teenager. Due to serious injury, he had to give up jumping and then concentrated on Alpine events. A few years later, the multi-talent became the first Austrian to win an Olympic medal in Alpine Skiing by claiming silver in the downhill event at the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz (SUI).
After his retirement from ski sports, Gabl coached the ladies’ Canadian Olympic Ski Team in 1952 and the men’s squad four years later.
