Ricker and Bakes lead qualifiers
Canada's Maelle Ricker and David Bakes from the Czech Republic have been today's number one qualifiers for the season's second Snowboard Cross taking place in Telluride.
30-years-old Ricker had clinched her spot in tomorrow's heat 1 of the finals by nailing a time of 1:14:21 minutes on the 1,020 metres long course built by Jeff Ihaksi (CAN). The Squamish resident was followed by Helene Olafsen (NOR) who improved her time of run one in her second try by almost two seconds to 1:14:54. Only two hundredths behind was Swiss rider Simona Meiler. With Dominique Maltais (1:14:91) another Canadian rider rounded out the top four qualifiers who all stayed under 1:15 minutes.
On the men's side it was David Bakes who shocked the international field by storming in 1:10:33 minutes into the finish. Three Northern Americans were breathing down his neck, all within just for tenths of a second behind. Olympic Champion Seth Wescott (USA) took the second spot (1:10:46), while his fellow countryman Nick Baumgartner placed third (1:10:66). Tom Velisek needed 1:10:72 minutes to clear the exhausting course.
