Growing up in Solothurn, Switzerland, Tim Hug had always been skiing as a child but came into contact with ski jumping for the first time when his older brother Jan attended a trial day during the school holidays. Young Tim was hooked and up on the hill in Kandersteg at 8 years of age to try jumping himself. After getting over his initial fear, there was no stopping him. He turned to Nordic Combined, although the sport is not really popular in Switzerland and the athletes have to deal with very small teams and receive not a lot of funding.
So for Hug, who has been starting as a Swiss "one man show" in the last seasons, the situation has not been easy but he proves to still be fascinated from the contrast between elasticity-based ski jumping and the endurance required for cross-country skiing.
Hug has seen his first great season in the winter of 2013/14 with three Top Ten ranks and his first World Cup win at the Russian venue of Chaikovskiy, six years after his World Cup debut at Seefeld, Austria. In the winter of 2016/17, Hug made another big step ahead after several tough seasons. The by then 29-year-old returned to the podium with a second rank in Sapporo, Japan and with stable Top 20 results, Hug finished on a 16th place in the overall World Cup.
Hug has also represented his country at five Olympic and twelve World Championship competitions
