Adam Cieslar wins Universiade Individual Gundersen
Poland's Adam Cieslar has taken the victory at the first Nordic Combined competition of the Universiade in Trentino. Today, the Individual Gundersen race was on schedule and Cieslar crossed the finish line 10,1 seconds ahead of Johannes Wasel from Germany. The podium was complete by Aguri Shimizu from Japan.
After the Ski Jumping session at the 26th Winter Universiade Trentino 2013 Johannes Wasel had been leading with a jump of 101 metres, giving him132.9 points and a headstart of 10 seconds on fellow countryman Tobias Simon (130.3 points. Future winner Adam Cieslar lay in wait in third with a jump of 99 metres (126.7 points) and started 25 seconds behind.
During the 10km Gundersen race, however, Cieslar needed 6,6 kilometers to close the gap to the leader Johannes Wasel. On the last 2000 meters, Cieslar broke away and reached the finish line alone after 26:48.0 minutes. 10,1 seconds later, Wasel secured silver. Bronze went to the japanese Aguri Shimizu (19.2 seconds behind) who was the winner of the NC mass start competition in Erzurum two years ago.
Germany’s Tobias Daniel Simon who was runner-up at half-time finished 19th in the final standing. The Top Ten were rounded out by Petr Kutl from the Czech Republic on rank four, Matti Herola and Eetu Vähäsöyrinki from Finland on five and six and Espen Andersen, Shota Horigome Markus Sommerhalter and Go Yamanoto, making the Japanese team the most successful one with three athletes inside the Top Ten.
"It was a great day for me", Adam Cieslar said. "I wanted to win and gave everything I had during the last kilometer."
Nordic Combined will be on at the Winter Universiade Trentino 2013 on Monday, December 16th, when the Mass Start (10 km/HS106) will be carried out.
