COC: Go Yamamoto with amazing weekend in Klingenthal
Japanese Go Yamamoto has had quite the COC opener weekend in Klingenthal, Germany. The 21-year-old claimed two second places on Friday and Saturday and took his first-ever Continental Cup win today.
In the jumping part, only 17-year-old Florian Dagn was better than Yamamoto and showed 132.5 metres which gave him 7 seconds of head start on the Japanese. Yamamoto himself jumped 131 metres (124.3 p.). 32 seconds after Dagn, Norwegian Sindre Ure Søtvik started into the race after a 128-metre jump.
Yamamoto was able to wrestle the victory from Dagn on the track, even though he had stated in his interview on Friday that he is not a fan of the longer distances and prefers the 5 km events. Yamamoto managed to catch up to Dagn and finished seven seconds before the Austrian in the end. Søtvik held on to his third place and finished 28 seconds after the winner.
The rest of the Top Ten spots went to USA’s Ben Loomis, Thomas Kjelbotn from Norway, Thomas Jöbstl, Martin Fritz and Michael Dünkel. The fastest cross-country skier was Hugo Buffard again who skied the 10 km in 22:04.8, impriving from rank 56 to 30.
Go Yamamoto extends his lead in the Continental Cup overall to 260 points. Tobias Simon from German is second with 190, Florian Dagn has 169 points to show for after the first weekend.
