The last two weeks of the Nordic Combined season 2017/18 are jam-packed with competition action. After the traditional stop at the Holmenkollen on Saturday, the World Cup now moved to Trondheim to re-unite with the Nordic Combined juniors. Two joint competition days of World Cup and Youth Cup are awaiting the athletes at the last stop on Norwegian soil for this winter.

Nice snowy and, especially important, calm winter conditions are forecasted for when the Youth Cup concludes their season with four total events for boys and girls and 200 World Cup points on the line for the big stars of the discipline. A big highlight will be the joint prize giving ceremony for World and Youth Cup on Wednesday.

Who will present the prizes to the young athletes is still an open question. Akito Watabe made another step in the direction of the overall World Cup victory with the win at his favourite venue in Oslo on Saturday. The pressure is now on Jan Schmid to do well if he wants to stay on the Japanese’s heels but competing at one’s home town and cheered on by the home crowd does wonders for the performance sometimes.

While the German team around Johannes Rydzek and Fabian Rießle and also local hero Jørgen Graabak are facing a tough uphill battle for the top two spots in the World Cup standings, the third place is fought over fiercely with the three athletes holding 632, 631 and 603 points. It remains to be seen which athlete’s batteries are still charged the most with a tough program of four individual events in six days coming up.
