Matti Runggaldier wins Gold in Erzurum
After the jumping portion at the first Gundersen-competition at the Junior World Championships in Erzurum it didn't seem as if it would be the day of young Italian Mattia Runggaldier. He was 29th and 1:29 minutes back before the 10 km race. With the fastest time of the race and clever tactics Runggaldier could crown a fantastic race for him with winning the Gold medal. Germany's Manuel Faisst and Michael Schuller finished second and third.
German Christian Arlt had a lead of only two seconds after the jumping with 100 m - followed by the Norwegians Espen Andersen and Sindre Ure Soetvik. Arlt and Andersen the worked together and controlled the field in the race for the first 7.5 km.
The medalists Faisst, Schuller and Runggaldier could close the gap to the two leaders at the end of the third lap. The German athletes in this group worked well together, but Runggaldier was able to break away in the final lap and won the race 6.5 second ahead. Best team today was Germany with three athletes in the Top 10.
The next nordic combined event in Erzurum will be the team competition on Friday, Feb. 24th.
