COC-M: Austrians dominate home event in Stams
The Austrians, who are competing in this weekend's Continental Cup in Stams (AUT) with almost their complete World Cup team, proved to be unbeatable in the first competition on Saturday and had a total of six athletes among the best seven jumpers.
The win went to Philipp Aschenwald, who jumped on 118.5 m and 113 m and scored a total of 271.5 points. This was already the third win this summer and the fourth podium finish in a row for the 22-year-old Tyrolean. "I knew that I'm in a very good shape and so I was not nervous competing against our World Cup team. I just wanted to show two cool jumps. Of course, it would be great if I could achieve yet another win here in Stams, but for that I need two outstanding jumps again and I'll try to do that tomorrow", said the winner.
World Champion Stefan Kraft finished second behind his teammate with jumps of 114 m and 111 m and 264.1 points. "These weren't my best jumps, but I'm satisfied. The competition was on a very high level and Philipp Aschenwald was extremely strong. The result is really good for our team and we are happy that we had six Austrians in the Top 7", said Stefan Kraft.
Clemens Aigner completed the podium sweep of the local heroes in third with 113.5 m and 111.5 m and 257.1 points. "I'm satisfied, even if I can still jump better. I really wanted to win again and I couldn't achieve that, but there's another chance tomorrow. The conditions here in Stams were definitely very good, a home event is always great. My entire family was here and it was a great competition training for us today given the field of competitors", said Clemens Aigner.
2.5 points behind the Top 3, Kilian Peier of Switzerland came in fourth, he was followed by three more jumpers from Austria with Andreas Kofler (5th), Daniel Huber (6th) and Gregor Schlierenzauer (7th).
Moritz Baer moved up from 12th to eighth in the second round and was the best German in Stams, his two teammates David Siegel and Constantin Schmid finished on the places ten and eleven. Best Norwegian was Sondre Ringen, who was ninth on Saturday.
Sebastian Colloredo, Joachim Hauer, Marius Lindvik, Manuel Poppinger and Nejc Dezman failed to make the cut for the final round of the Top 30 in this strong field of competitors.
Philipp Aschenwald leads the overall ranking of the Continental Cup with now 398 points, Kilian Peier (250 points) and Czech Lukas Hlava (189 points) follow in second and third.
The second competition in Stams is held on Sunday at 10 am CET.
