COC: Austrians sweep the podium
At the end it turned out that Iron Mountain was worth the long trip for the Austrian team after all. After no Austrian jumper could finish among the best in Saturday's competition, the team had three athletes on the podium in the second competition on the Pine Mountain.
The best on Sunday afternoon in Michigan was Florian Altenburger with jumps on 131 m and 124.5 m and 229.1 points. For the 22-year-old of Salzburg this was the third win in the Continental Cup, the second one this winter.
After the first round Elias Tollinger was leading ahead of the later winner with 130.5 m, with his second jump on 120.5 m and a total of 228.4 points he finished second overall in this close competition.
Clemens Aigner was the best Austrian on Saturday in eleventh and also in this competition he was only tenth after the first round with 125 m. But with his second jump on 129 m and 227.0 points he could move up to third.
German veteran Michael Neumayer was fourth and missed the podium by only 0.6 points. Joacim Oedegaard Bjoereng followed only 0.1 points behind the 37-year-old. The Norwegian was able to move up from 13th to fifth with the longest jump of the day on 136.5 m in the final round.
Besides Bjoereng, who also moved up many places in the second round on the day before, Espen Roee (6th), Robert Johansson (7th) and Rune Velta (9th) provided a very good team result for the Norwegians.
Bartlomiej Klusek was again the by far best athlete of the Polish team in eighth, Germany's Pius Paschke completed the Top 10.
With his third place Clemens Aigner could extend his lead in the overall ranking of the COC, he now scored 657 points. Karl Geiger (574 points) and Tom Hilde (558 points), both currently competing in the World Cup, remain in second and third. Florian Altenburger is now fourth with 520 points.
