COC: Philipp Aschenwald takes his first win
The first of two Continental Cup competitions on the large hill in the ski jumping center of Planica (SLO) ended with the first win of Philipp Aschenwald.
The Austrian, with 131.5 m eighth after the first round, posted the longest jump of the day in the final round with 138.5 m and won with a total of 276.7 points.
The second and third place went to the hosts of Slovenia. Anze Semenic was fourth after the first half of the competition with 129 m. He took his spot on the podium with his second jump on 136 m and 271.0 points.
The best in the first round, Tomaz Naglic, finished third overall close behind his teammate with his jumps on 131.5 m and 130.5 m and 270.4 points. Both Slovenes could celebrate their first Top 3 result this season.
Piotr Zyla of Poland moved up from tenth to fourth with a great jump on 137 m in the final round. Behind the best German Tim Fuchs in fifth, Tilen Bartol was sixth and completed the very good team result for the Slovenes in front of their home crowd.
With Thomas Hofer in seventh and Clemens Aigner in eighth, the Austrian team can also be very satisfied with their performance on Saturday afternoon, even though more would have possible for Hofer, who was second in the first round.
The ninth place went to Italy's Alex Insam, Markus Eisenbichler of Germany took the final spot in the Top 10.
World Champion Rune Velta can still not get in a good shape this winter. He failed to qualify for the final in 33rd. Also German veteran Michael Neumayer didn't make the cut for the second round in 35th.
In the overall ranking of the COC three athletes are in the lead, who are competing in the World Cup in Oslo this weekend. Karl Geiger (574 points) leads ahead of Tom Hilde (558 points) and David Siegel (459 points).
