Robert Kranjec the best in training
It was a turbulent first day at the FIS Grand Prix 2016 in Chaikovsky (RUS). But at first it was the wind, and not the athletes, that caused a stir at the impressive HS 140 hill.
The jury decided to postpone the start of the official training from noon to the evening (7:00 pm local time) already at the team captain's meeting in the morning.
And this decision proved to be absolutely right. Two training rounds could be carried out under good weather conditions in the evening. There are only 48 competitors in Chaikovsky and so only two training rounds were held, no qualification was necessary.
Slovenia's Robert Kranjec showed the best performance on the first day in Russia. Kranjec had the best jumps in both training rounds and so the 2012 Ski Flying World Champion is now the top favorite for the competitions this weekend.
Besides Kranjec, also Tomas Vancura of the Czech Republic presented himself in a strong shape. The youngster, who has been showing strong performances the whole summer, has to be reckoned with here.
The weather shall be better in the region around Chaikovsky on Saturday and Sunday, and so the wind shall not cause any problems for the competitions (Saturday at 12:00 pm CET and Sunday at 11:00 am CET).
