Dekker and Bormolini with perfect start into WCS season
Michelle Dekker and Maurizio Bormolini have triumphed at this season's opener of the alpine snowboard Europa Cup tour which saw a top-class and strong field competing in a parallel slalom race staged at SnowWorld Landgraaf (NED).
The former World Cup venue had drawn several world championships and Olympic medallist to its 260 metres long indoor slope to lock horns for the first time this season.
And it was a local hero which impressed the most. Michelle Dekker who just came back from a long-time injury break edged off Austria's Daniela Ulbing to the second rank in the big finals (re-run format) of the women's competition with Ladina Jenny (SUI) rounding out the podium as third.
“After missing most of last season due to glandular disease, I did not expect such a good result here. It is really great to come back like this. I’ve been feeling well for a couple of months, but I missed a lot of time on my snowboard.
I focused mainly on strength training and I’m very happy my recovery turned out so well. This gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. And of course I hope to win again tomorrow.”
So does Maurizio Bormolini who held the upper hand on Germany's Stefan Baumeister in the men's big final.
“I’m very happy with this result. In the second semi final run I made a mistake, so I had to really push it to make it to the final. It was difficult, and it was a long race, but it was fun. Before this competition I had a week of holiday, I think that was my secret to win here,” he said.
2016-17 overall alpine snowboard World Cup winner Radoslav Yankov (BUL) finished third underlining that his last outstanding season wasn't a dayfly at all.

The second parallel slalom of this back-to-back Europa Cup stop at Landgraaf will take place today.
