  • Sometimes competing is something natural. Well, it truly is for Jarryd Hughes.

Just one day prior to his first ever competition, he picked up a snowboard for the first time – at the age of six.

Although he cannot remember his result, he does remember that it came natural. And it kept doing so ever since.

He made the junior national team with 13, and when he came over to the US one time, he decided to spend his winters in Steamboat heading back home over the pond for the winter slopes down under in April.

Hughes then debuted with 16 years on the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup tour bringing home an incredible tenth-rank-finish.

Just a few weeks later, he claimed Silver at the FIS Junior World Championships.

After his first full World Cup season the regular footer had to handle a first set-back.

Hughes, who is coached by Jon Casson and rides together with Team Utah Boardercross mates 2010 Halfpipe Olympic Champion Torah Bright as well as US-athletes Jenna Feldman and Mick Dierdorff wasn't able to compete in the 2013 Australian season after undergoing knee surgery.

However, he bounced back better than ever though, launching into the 2013/14 World Cup season with a bang.

At the first event in Montafon, Austria, Hughes finished a credible eighth but it was just a couple of weeks later in Lake Louise, Canada, where he put the world on notice, winning gold.

With about 200 metres left in the final, Hughes piled on the speed, giving himself an unassailable lead, running out a clear winner ahead of Olympic medal contender Konstantin Schad of Germany.

With two more small final appearances in the last two races prior to the Sochi Winter Games in Sochi, this young Olympic hopeful is ready for his career's first Games.
