The Czech Republic has produced quite a bunch of very food snowboarders in all Olympic disciplines – however, the most successful of them is Eva Samkova who won Olympic gold in the snowboard cross event back in 2014.
Nevertheless it's not only her outstanding Sochi performance what makes her one of the greatest sport talents of her home country but especially her road to success.
Born and raised in Vrchlabi Samkova has been focusing on becoming one of the worlds best athletes since 2008 when she joined the national team to work with coaches Marek Jelínek and Jakub Flejšar.
Ever since, the bubbly snowboarder has been a rising star – despite some minor setbacks due to knee injuries in 2011-12 and 2014-15.
She first stepped on the big scene when she locked in her first junior world championships gold in New Zealand back in 2010 before adding two more junior titles in 2011 and 2013 which could be named her breakthrough year due to an additional gold at the Universiade in Italy as well as her first career World Cup win.
Ever since, Samkova who is still missing a world championships medal has been a major threat to the podium being able to come strong from behind on the rare occasions she doesn't start well.
Besides her sportive success her unique good luck routine on race days also attracts some attention as Samkova is sporting an ink mustache every time she drops into high-pressure competition.
