The snowboard cross athletes of Team Snowboard Austria have kicked off their final winter preparation with a training camp in Ericeira, Portugal.

Over the course of one week, Coaches Tom Greil and Gerald Kerschhackel put the main focus for the squad consisting of Markus Schairer, Alessandro and Michael Hämmerle, Hanno Douschan, Christopher Fischer, Julian Lüftner as well as Susanne Moll and Maria Ramberger on surfing.

Unusual weather conditions with southerly winds provided a strong swell with waves up to 3,5 metres in size which stretched the riders to their limits.

“In the beginning, the strong current with its big waves made it impossible for the team to catch a wave. But they got better from day to day and after one week, everybody knew how to handle the ocean.

In addition, they learned to read the waves to get a chance to ride one,” said Head Coach Tom Greil.

2013 World Championships Silver medallist Markus Schairer added: “At first, it was tough to handle the waves but with the first sense of achievement we were driven by ambition. So, we ended up with an early morning session on our return day.”

Besides surfing, also running units and stamina exercises on the Foz do Lizandro beach were part of the daily training programme.
